Age in Spain has extended its Residency Helpline and information service to the Canaries thanks to support from the UK Government UK National Support Fund. Since 29 October, our Regional Coordinator, Deepika Harjani has been promoting the service and actively helping people with information and support on residency issues in Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife.
In Lanzarote, Sue Thain, Honorary Consul, introduced Deepika to the lovely neighbourhood of Tías where they met Revd Stan Evans and his wife, followed by a meeting with Social Services to explain how the Age in Spain Helpline can help UK nationals who need support. The Vice-Consuls for Gran Canaria, Jackie Stevenson, and Helen Diaz de Arcaya Keating for Tenerife has also helped with introductions and delivered a joint presentation with Deepika at the Anglican Church of Puerto de la Cruz, which was attended by thirty six people.
With almost 24.000 UK nationals living in the Canaries, and many more who visit regularly, Deepika is concerned that people fully understand the implications of Brexit. The Head of Extranjeria in Gran Canaria, whom she met with this week, strongly recommended UK nationals not to leave things until the last minute.
‘People are beginning to panic’, says Deepika, ‘but there is still time to start getting your paperwork in place before 30 December’. Our free information service is available to all and upcoming information pop ups are published on our website, in our newsletter and on our Facebook page.
